20 kg, tested — 35 × 39 × 16 cm of usable space, roughly what four supermarket carrier bags hold, or two loads of laundry. The bag itself weighs 380 g, so what you feel is your shopping rather than the bag, and the 5.5 cm straps spread it across your shoulder instead of into your fingers. Walking home rather than loading a car? Most people find 10–12 kg comfortable. Filling it to 20 kg is fine for the bag, but it will feel like 20 kg. What it won't do is a month's stock-up — if your weekly shop fills the boot, two bags is the honest answer.

There are two closures. The drawstring gathers the 100 cm opening shut in one pull, and a magnetic snap holds the top panels together so nothing tips out when you set the bag down or swing it into the car. Valuables go in the zipped inner pocket, and a key leash stops keys sinking to the bottom. To be straight with you: this is a cinch closure, not a zip across the whole top. It is made for markets, laundry and the school run, not for a crowded train platform.

A 100 cm circle seats two adults comfortably, or one adult with two small children. It is designed as a clean surface you always have with you — for food, shoes, a bag, a baby's things — rather than a replacement for a full picnic blanket. If you regularly picnic as a family of four or more, open two bags side by side: that covers about 2 m of ground and still packs down into a drawer.

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, then hang to dry. No tumble dryer and no bleach — both damage the water-repellent finish. Hand washing works too. The fabric is water-repellent rather than waterproof, so it handles rain, wet grass and splashes, but should not be submerged.
